As a breast cancer survivor, Barbara Hoffer is compassionate about “helping others gain and maintain a healthier body at each stage of life.” She sees cancer as a turning point for change. Given tools and insights for healing the body, she has found that many thrive after treatment and truly enhance their quality of life. Her Pink Ribbon classes are Pilates-based strengthening classes for post treatment lifestyle management and success. They are designed to stretch and strengthen the muscles most affected by breast cancer surgery as well as enhance physical energy level and mental well being. Pink Ribbon Pilates courses are for women of all fitness levels and recovery levels, seeking to regain full range of motion of the upper body in order to move efficiently in every day activities.

As a devotee of the 5 Rhythms dance discipline, she finds inspiration through movement, often referring to Pilates as “dancing yoga.’Passionate about dance as a spiritual practice, she is a student of the Anna Halprin’s Tamalpa Institute, a movement-based expressive arts approach that integrates movement/dance, visual arts, performance techniques and therapeutic practices. Learning to thrive after breast cancer enhances Barbara’s work as a healing teacher who understands firsthand the impact of stress on the body. Her mission is to push her clients past places where they may be stuck through compassion and a helping hand. What gets her up in the morning is her desire to help others gain and maintain a healthier body at every stage of life. This drive has nspired her to become certified to work with post surgery rehab to help other women thrive.

Over the past eight years Hoffer has served on the Executive Board for San Francisco’s cancer hospital, UCSF Mt. Zion. Hoffer’s community service has been dedicated to speaking and fundraising for programs dedicated to direct services to patients and to cancer research. In addition to her Hatha Yoga certification, Hoffer is a certified massage therapist from the International School of Massage Therapy, a Certified Pilates instructor from the Physical Mind institute NYC, and a Certified post-rehab breast cancer exercise specialist. She is also involved in the awareness and prevention of osteoporosis through Pilates, diet directives, pilates for golf and the Tamalpa Institute.

March 17

Retief Goosen was about ready to give up. His lower back was in so much pain that he decided to withdraw next week from Bay Hill so he could get treatment. A double bogey late in his round knocked him nine spots down the leaderboard, which he figured was the end of his hopes to get into the Masters.

One day later, everything changed. Retief decided Friday to pull out of Bay Hill and arranged for a protein injection in Virginia on Wednesday. Suddenly, he is able to play and the final round is packed with significance.
WOW..it bothers me just to type this..an injection??? How about FIXING the problem!

Newsletter #1 Greeting

Days weeks and months fly by, and here we are at 2012! May this year be one of renewal and gratitude. Take the weight off of your shoulders; let go of what no longer serves you. Here’s to healthy choices daily so you can play with vitality, all ways.

Cheers,
Barbara

Newsletter #1: Stress Less, Stretch More

Ask yourself daily, “What in the world am I carrying on my shoulders? At least 3X a day, take a moment to breathe and stretch away fatigue.

Corner stretch: Stand facing a corner; place forearms against the walls with elbows flexed at 90degrees. With your hips aligned and stable, gently lean your body through the arms as it moves towards the wall. Hold stretch for 15 counts; repeat 3X.

– Marie-Jose Blom, Founder, Long Beach Dance Conditioning

Standing roll down: Stand in with tall spine against a wall, neutral pelvis. Inhale through the nose, keeping the shoulders down as your breath into the sides of your ribs. Roll down on exhale, as your abs go in to stabilize your pelvis. Round head to belly button. Inhale again while you are there; exhale and roll up from the sitz bones and tailbone, stacking each vertebra on top of each other.

– Angi Spector, Founder, Mind Body Connection

Standing roll down redux: Repeat above. Once you are rolled down, stay there and breathe for 3 full breaths. Pull your belly button up and in. Grasp each elbow with the opposite hand. Stay there and breathe, 3 full breaths into your heart; recall something you’re grateful for today. Gently sway from side to side. Inhale again; exhale as you roll up slowly, one vertebra at a time. Stand anew. As if a string’s attached to the crown of your head, align your ears over shoulders and shoulders over hips. Slide your shoulder blades down toward your hip pockets and away from your earlobes.

Carrying less stress? Thank yourself for making time to breathe and release. Now “be” more as you “do” less.

At 81, my cousin Bernard Leff of Houston made his very first hole in one. Phil and Bernard’s attitudes about winning are the same: “Why sit on the sidelines and let everyone else make the mistakes? You can’t win if you don’t play!”

Whatever your game, vow to play more in 2012 than ever before.

Like heavyweights in a title bout, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson went to opposite corners upon arriving at the first tee box Sunday at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson paired up for Sunday’s final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with each man looking to take another step toward restoring his place among the PGA’s top players. But instead of duking it out like memorable tournaments past, Mickelson soared while Woods faltered.

Even their caddies exchanged more words than did Woods and Mickelson!

Paired in a final round for the 10th time since 1997, they cagily stalked each other in the early going, spurred on by an exuberant gallery tilted slightly in Mickelson’s favor.

Mickelson went on to claim his 40th tour victory by mounting the kind of charge that used to be all in a final-round workday for Woods. Trailing Woods by two strokes and Wi by six at the day’s start, Mickelson played the first six holes in five under par and never looked back. He closed with an eight-under 64 for a 17-under 269 to win for the fourth time here. Mickelson, who has come from behind in 17 of his victories, passed Woods, who carded a 75 to finish tied for 15th at eight-under 278.

Mickelson, true to form, thanked Tiger for his inspiration…

“I know that his level of play is so much greater when he’s playing his best than anybody else’s, that it just forces me to focus on my game more intently, and hit more precise shots,” said Mickelson, who has faced several distractions recently, among them a health scare involving his middle child, Sophie, and the defamamtion lawsuit he has filed against an anonymous Internet poster. “I just feel very inspired playing with him,” Mickelson said. “I love playing with him. … He brings out some of my very best golf.”

”I hope that he continues to play better, and better, and I hope that he and I have a chance to play together more in the final rounds.”

Those words had to hurt Woods more than the final score. There was a time when Mickelson folded like a road map when paired with Woods. There was a time when Mickelson’s putts would have been all over the greens, not Woods’s. Sunday, however, Mickelson – whose putter has often been his nemesis – was like Ty Webb in “Caddyshack”; everything was going in. And Woods’s putts? Well, they weren’t.

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods together in the final round has produced the highest rating for CBS Sports at Pebble Beach in 15 years.
